HISTORY OF WAKE-EDEN COMMUNITY BAPTIST CHURCH
In September 1969 Rev. Samuel Simpson, Pastor of the Bronx Baptist Church, and his family relocated to the Wakefield section of the Bronx. He soon noticed an attractive church building in the neighborhood – but it was closed. He was surprised as the community was definitely in need of a church. He contacted the Pastor of the church and offered to work with him to revive the ministry in the area. He was not successful in this, but his offer to rent the building was accepted.
A canvas of community residents confirmed his belief that there was need for a church, as well as other needs. Pastor Simpson shared his vision for establishing a mission in the Northeast Bronx with Bronx Baptist Church and Greenwich Baptist church in Connecticut. Greenwich Baptist agreed to assist with the mission, and assumed rental obligations for the first two years. With the blessing of Bronx Baptist Church, Rev. Simpson would serve as pastor of both churches.
With God’s help, guidance and direction, an inaugural service was held on May 2, 1972, and the new mission began under the name Wake-Eden Community Baptist Chapel. The church was filled to capacity. Among those present were denominational leader, community residents, members of Bronx Baptist and Greenwich Baptist churches, the neighborhood school principal and community and civic leaders.
In 1979 the church was incorporated, and affirmed its affiliation with the Metropolitan New York Baptist Association, the Baptist Convention of New York and the Southern Baptist Convention. In that same year Wake-Eden contracted to purchase the entire property – the sanctuary, education building and pastorium – from the Lutheran Church of America.
From its inception, Wake-Eden’s foundation has been built on Prayer, Bible Study and the initiative and involvement of lay persons. We give glory to God for growing His church at Wake-Eden, and for involving us in many areas of ministry. Several programs have been implemented with the express purpose of relating to the uncommitted, serving the community and promoting fellowship among the members, all to the glory of God.
